Kids Alliance Summer Active Program

This summer Kids Alliance hosted a series of events.  These events were organized by our youth councils. Each council designed events for their own neighborhood. The events were: Soccer, Tag, Soccer-baseball, Basketball, Road Hockey , a Scavenger Hunt, Games Day and Sidewalk chalk drawing. Each activity was located at different parks throughout the city.

Car Wash August 18th 2007

The car wash was a success, we would like to thank all those who came and supported us.  Special Thanks to The Kids Alliance Alumni that came and washed the cars.  We hope to do this again to raise money for future events.

Ball Game of Ages August 3rd 2007

On August 3rd, Kids Alliance and The Windsor Essex Senior Sports (WESSO) organization hosted the Ball Game of Ages. There were almost 50 Senior’s and Youth that came together to play a fun game of baseball.  We formed two teams of both senior’s and youth and had a BALL! Afterwards we had a Barbeque with some hot dogs, water and pop. The Youth found new respect for the seniors and vise versa.  For the growing population of seniors, it is important to respect and understand seniors, and them to respect and understand the youth and today Kids Alliance and (WESSO) have done it and hope to continue doing it for years to come. Thanks to all those who supported us and came out to the game. We hope even more people will come next time. Thanks

Rocking for a Cure

The Kids Alliance Alumni with some help from the Coronation and St. Jules Youth Councils hosted a very successful community event. Pykes Park was overflowing with more than 200 children and adults. The event offered a fun afternoon for the local residents and while they were at the park provided them with information on sun safety, bicycle safety, tattoo safety, swimming safety and tips on healthy eating. The 2 youth councils provided the children’s games while the alumni took care of the safety booths, face painting, barbeque and volleyball. The Fire department set up their special peacock nozzle and the children had a giant sprinkler to cool them down. A thank you goes out to the Parks and Recreation Department for preparing the park for the event and bringing extra garbage cans, the life guards from Windsor Water World for the presentation on safe swimming, the Health Unit for donating sun safety books and the Hep C program for the safe tattoo information. The Kids Alliance members once again have done a great job at bringing their community together for this summer time initiative.

Kids Alliance at the Challenges for Success Ropes Course

The Teen Health Centre’s Ropes course was a great setting for new and veteran Kids Alliance members to get better acquainted, build team cohesion, set goals for the upcoming year and have a great time. Thank you to the ropes course and their fine staff for a GREAT DAY!

Alumni Recycling Tour

A small but enthusiastic group of Kids Alliance Alumni toured the recycling plant in Windsor. The group wanted to learn more about the plant after the recent article in the Windsor Star, reporting how poor we are at recycling. The recycling material goes from a large pile onto a conveyer, it is separated then it goes into a machine which compresses the stuff into a large cube to be loaded onto a truck and then it is brought to the place that turns it back into useable material. The employees were very busy separating all of the paper, cans, bottles etc. We would like to thank Dave Semus for the tour!! The Alumni thought that from the amount of stuff in the plant that Windsor is doing a pretty good job of recycling but we will be thinking of things we can do to help Windsor improve.

Bridgeview Park Clean Up

On Wednesday, August 16th, the St John youth council hosted a park clean up of Bridgeview Park.  Since it is being reconstructed to better suit the needs of the community, the youth council members wanted to make sure the park looked its best.  Several youth council members awoke hours before their noon hour alarm clocks went off and helped to pick up bottles, cans and general trash from the area.  Besides this, the youth council wrote to city council asking for more garbage cans in the park, as there is currently only one.  After the clean up, everyone cooled down with a water balloon fight to celebrate how good the park looked.  All in attendance had a great time and the park looks great!

Mic Mac Swim Event

Kids Alliance and the Taylor youth council rented the rec pool at Mic Mac Park this Thursday August 18th to give kids who do not have a chance to go swimming in the summer a chance to swim for free.  There were more than 30 people in attendance and everyone was disappointed when the time came to an end.  It was a sunny, hot day and the kids were glad to have an escape and have some fun in the water.

3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at Alton Parker Park/Water World

The basketball tournament organized by the Immaculate Conception and Begley Youth Councils finally took place. Due to weather conditions the tournament had been postponed earlier this summer. The youth councils regrouped and distributed numerous flyers to area recreation centres, Windsor Housing Corporation apartments, local businesses and other local residents. The youth councils wanted to provide an activity to get local kids active and have some safe fun this summer. The youth council members were extremely proud at the 50 plus youth who attended their event. Dave Collins the Kids Alliance summer student did a tremendous job facilitating the process with these two youth councils this summer. All of the kids at the event also received prizes, free swimming passes, healthy snacks and water due to a Health Action grant secured through Jodi Pearce. A huge thank you goes out to Brianne Whitty from the Parks and Recreation Department for her support at the events. Kids Alliance Facilitator Zakia and her children also attended the event to lend a helping hand. Windsor Waterworld also needs to be thanked due to their flexibility in opening up their gym to us after the rains came for the second time. The success of this event was due to hard work and a great community effort.
